Liquidity vs FDV vs Market Cap
Liquidity, fully diluted valuation, and market capitalization often appear beside one another on token dashboards, but they answer different questions. Liquidity concerns available trading inventory, market cap combines price with circulating supply, and FDV applies price to a broader supply measure. Three metrics, three questions
DEX liquidity asks how much token inventory is available for swaps and how strongly price responds to an order. Market capitalization asks what the circulating supply would be worth at the current reference price. FDV asks what a larger supply base, usually total or maximum supply depending on the provider, would be worth at that same price. The common formulas are market cap = current price * circulating supply and FDV = current price * total or maximum supply.
These formulas are simple, but every input has assumptions. A current price might come from one pool, an aggregate of venues, or a volume weighted method. Circulating supply requires decisions about team allocations, vesting, treasury balances, bridges, and burned tokens. FDV may use total supply when no credible maximum exists. CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap document their own methodologies, so figures can legitimately differ across services.
A numerical comparison
Consider ORBIT at 2 USDC per token. Suppose 4,000,000 tokens circulate, total supply is 40,000,000, and a constant product pool holds 100,000 ORBIT plus 200,000 USDC. The nominal market cap is 8,000,000 USDC. The nominal FDV is 80,000,000 USDC. The pool contains 400,000 USDC of value if both sides are marked at the spot price, but only 200,000 actual USDC units are present.
It would be incorrect to infer that holders can collectively sell eight million dollars of ORBIT at 2 USDC. In a simplified fee free constant product pool, selling 100,000 ORBIT doubles the token reserve from 100,000 to 200,000. To preserve x * y = k, the USDC reserve falls from 200,000 to 100,000. The seller receives 100,000 USDC, an average of 1 USDC per token, while the ending spot price is 0.5 USDC. Real fees and other venues modify the result, but valuation remains distinct from exit capacity.
What liquidity figures may include
A dashboard's liquidity label can mean total value locked in one pool, liquidity across several pools, or active liquidity within a price range. For a balanced ORBIT and USDC pool, reporting 400,000 USDC as total pool value counts both assets at the current mark. That is useful for comparison, but it should not be read as 400,000 redeemable USDC. Half of the marked value is ORBIT, whose price changes during sales.
Uniswap v3 complicates comparison because capital can be concentrated. A pool with lower total value may offer greater depth near the current price if most capital is active there. If price leaves the selected ranges, that advantage can disappear. Raydium also offers different pool structures, so a single total value number cannot fully describe the curve, range, fees, and accessible inventory.
Useful ratios and their limitations
Analysts sometimes calculate liquidity to market cap or liquidity to FDV. In the example, marked pool liquidity divided by market cap is 400,000 / 8,000,000 = 5 percent. This can flag an unusually large gap between quoted valuation and visible pool size. It is not a universal quality score. Aggregating duplicate liquidity, counting inactive ranges, ignoring centralized venues, or using an incorrect supply can distort the ratio.
FDV divided by market cap is another common comparison. Here it is 80,000,000 / 8,000,000 = 10. The ratio reflects the chosen supply figures, not a schedule for tokens entering circulation. Unlock timing, minting rules, emissions, burns, and contract permissions need separate investigation. GoPlus token security data can add contract level signals, but it does not determine economic value or future liquidity.
A better reading workflow
Start by confirming the contract address and the venue used for pricing. Record circulating, total, and maximum supply with the provider's timestamp and definitions. For liquidity, inspect each relevant pool's reserves, fee tier, range distribution, recent volume, and estimated price impact at realistic order sizes. This keeps a calculated valuation from standing in for execution analysis.
All three metrics are snapshots. Prices move, supplies change, liquidity providers rebalance or withdraw, and index providers revise data. Market cap and FDV help normalize supply against price. Liquidity helps describe the market available to trade. None independently proves adoption, safety, fair value, or the ability to execute a large transaction at the displayed price.
